The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

This is a story about a boy who leaves India to begin a medical residency in the United States. The story tracks his journey and struggles between upholding family traditions and expectations and navigating the foreign culture of the United States. The story also follows his childhood friend, who is a woman who remains in India, and her experience in an arranged marriage. I found the book very interesting and gave a lot of insight into the immigrant experience and the challenges they have to face, as well as the female experience of a woman in India. I enjoy books that open my eyes to other cultures and the way of life for women in other countries, which is so different from my own Western culture. This was an extremely interesting, heartfelt and insightful read.
